The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released its National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, the most comprehensive assessment to date of the exposure of the U.S. population to chemicals in the environment.
Chemicals were measured from blood and urine samples of about 2,400 people. Researchers found 212 chemicals in those samples, 75 of which had never been found before. Among them were bisphenol A and even Arsenic!Bisphenol A (BPA) was found in 90% of urine samples. BPA poisoning is expected to occur by ingesting foods that are in contact with BPA-containing materials such as most tossable water bottles. BPA poisoning is suspected to have negative affects on our reproductive systems. Found were other widespread chemicals from pesticides, flame retardants, and non-stick material such as Teflon.
Further, and more amazingly, an Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently conducted a study of the umbilical cord blood of 10 American newborn babies. They found a total of 287 pollutants and chemicals in the cord blood, including waste from consumer products, coal, gas, and household garbage. Among them were chemicals used as grease repellants in fast food packaging, Teflon (which has been named a likely carcinogen by the EPA), and dozens of pesticides and flame-retardants. Of the chemicals detected, EWG reports that 180 of them cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous systems, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animals.
Radiance Tips for Helping You Reduce Your Chemical Exposure
Buy Organic, but be sure you are absorbing those nutrients!
Eating organic foods will reduce our exposure to pesticides and some antibiotic drugs. However, it seems we are no longer absorbing nutrients properly. This is due to our body’s efforts to protect itself from the toxins in processed foods and unhealthy snacks we have overwhelmed our systems with! At Radiance we offer Designs for Health Digestymes to help our bodies absorb those lost nutrients. A good probiotic such as
Transformation Professional Protocol Probiotic 42.5, also available at Radiance, will help remove the toxins we have already accumulated. If toxins sit in our intestines too long they can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and cause further problems.
The solution to pollution is dilution! When you feel bloated or can’t lose weight, you may also be suffering from additional toxins that have been retained in your gut or bodily systems. Our wellness doctor, Dr. Bobbie Stowe, can conduct the appropriate tests to determine what toxins your body is holding on to, and recommend a course of action, as well as the supplements your body is starved for. He can also guide you though the correct detox program.
We should all try to control our consumption of processed foods, which are full of preservatives, and artificial colors and flavors. As much as possible, we should choose foods free of pesticides, genetically modified ingredients (GMOs) and other additives.
And at home…
A study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found significantly higher concentrations of 20 chemicals inside our homes vs. in the great outdoors. Let’s open those windows and circulate some fresh air! Exhaust fans in the bathroom, kitchen and attic will provide outside ventilation, and an air-circulation system can help circulate fresh air and remove stale air.
Drinking pure water also helps flush toxins from our systems. A recent EWG study found 260 chemicals in U.S. drinking water supplies! And we already know to avoid BPA water bottles. A home purification system is inexpensive and easy to use.
Using typical cleaning sprays and air fresheners has been found to increase our risk of asthma, not to mention the chemicals they leave behind in homes. Vinegar and baking soda have been used as cleaning agents for centuries. Imagine the waste we can cut back on if we try eliminating our homes of all the different cleaning supplies (and their packaging) we think we need! Also imagine the toxic chemicals that stay in our carpets, furniture and on our kitchen countertops where we prepare food for our kids!
